Sights in and around Dover, DE

Evergreen trees are not as plentiful in Dover as in the west. Here is an evergreen trying to grow among the other trees along a roadside patch of trees.

It was amazing how dense the trees were in places. I truly know what was being said now by "Clearing the ground," can't imagine what it was like when the first settlers came to America to see all the trees growing together.

It was interesting to drive a short distance from Aaron & Shanessy's house to see the governors house, it was very beautiful and old.

There are so many old buildings in Dover, it was so neat to see them. There were places the bricks were so they were crumbly, but still the houses are standing. An awesome sight!

Dover Air Force Base

I couldn't believe the size of some of these air planes, they are huge!!!

Aaron works someplace back there

Air Control Tower on base. Aaron took us to the base to show us around. We have never been on an Air Force Base before. It was interesting, it is basically a town within a town. We mailed post cards from the Post Office on base, saw some of the housing, several huge air planes, and many other buildings on base. It is amazing all the stuff that goes into a base.

Hershey Park was so much fun. Grandpa & Grandpa Owens were even talked into riding on one of the Roller Coasters. It was a blast, but don't even think of getting me to go on one of the other Roller Coasters there, they were wicked looking.

Vacation Posts

I know I said I would get photos posted at least a week ago, but it seemed like such an overwhelming task until I came upon an idea. Post a few daily with specific headings. So I have finally gotten started. Better late than never. We had such a good time while in Delaware, we can't wait to return to visit with Aaron, Shanessy & Aeraci and of course see more of the sights, next time we will know more of what we want to spend more time doing and seeing.

Hagley Museum

The Hagley Museum is in Wilmington, Delaware. It is comprised of the Hagley Library, Eleutherian du Pont family home and other buildings associated with the du Pont family business that was started at this location along the Brandywine River.

It was hot and humid, but Aeraci was a good sport about letting daddy (Aaron), Grandpa & Grandma Owens look at everything they wanted to see at the museum.

One of the cars that a du Pont family member built, it looked like it was a pretty nice ride, even for the era it came from.

A very large wagon, which was the customary mode of long distant travel in the 1800's.

du Pont family home, the family resided here from 1803 to 1890. The gun powder mill was located down the hill at the back of the home. Four members of the family were killed in the home while the gun powder mill was in operation while they were in the house. The walls of the house are very thick. The interior is as beautiful as the outside.

Amish Market in Dover

The first place Aaron & Shanessy took us in Dover, DE was an Amish Market. It was a very interesting experience. The inside had all kinds of foods that the Amish community had made. They had the best chocolate covered strawberries I have ever tasted. All kinds of cheese, they even had a blue cheese that wasn't gross, it tasted pretty good!

The outside was like a HUGE yard sale. There was some neat stuff (which we had room to take some back on the plane, oh, that saved us from buying). There was also a farmer's market associated with the market.

On Wednesday, June 10 Annie and Austin came to town. Michelle needed to leave Claire and Callie with us while she took Cade for his second PKU. At first Austin, Claine and Callie just looked at each other, I think sizing each other us. After that it was time to play. I finally replaced the batteries in this little Sesame Street toy that the kids just love. Here are all three having fun pushing buttons, singing and laughing.

Callie, Claire holding Cade. Cade had decided just before we had gotten everyone on the couch he was going to be anything but happy. The binky helped to sooth the troubled waters for a couple of minutes.

Cade wasn't all that interested in what was going on around him for the few minutes he visited. Mom was taking him to his 1 week well baby check.

We got the trike out, but with two girls one trike just doesn't cut it. So I remembered that we had Annie's old scooter in the shed. Grandpa got it out then the fun really began. Callie trying to get the hang of it.

Claire caught on pretty fast once she was told that it would work better with the right foot on the scooter and push with the left foot. The best part was that every time she got off and had to start again she would ask, while shaking her right leg, "This one Grandma?" Then off she would go.

Some times the trike is just the best thing to share. They both decided that sharing the trike several times was lots easier than trying to master the scooter. I'm sure before the summer is over that the scooter will be mastered.

More Cade

Cade's quilt made by Grandma O. Each new grandchild gets a quilt that is designed and made just for them. Grandma found the cookie fabric last fall and started thinking "If you give a mouse a cookie" one of the grand children's favorite books. From there it was a matter of collecting all the right fabric. She did a pretty good job.

Some of Cade's first visitors were Aunt Annie and cousin Austin. Austin loves babies, but just like most 18 month old lettle people he only wants them for a few seconds.

May 31, 2009 at about 9:10pm, Cade Scott Owens was born. He weighted 9 pounds 9.6 ounces and is 22 inches long. He has dark brown hair, and everyone who was present (Daddy, Grammy Graves, Grandpa & Grandma Owens, Missy, Judy) all could see a little bit of Claire in Cade. It is such an awesome, humbling experience to watch the birth of a new baby, especially one BIC and the first grandson who will carry the Owens name in the Church. He is such a special little guy.

Addition to the Family

Looks like a lap full to me. While Deb was holding baby Bryce, Tanner (18 months) decided that he needed to be on Grandma's lap also.

You may have noticed Samantha (Sam) in the Andrus Family Reunion photos, she was very pregnant. She had baby Bryce on May 26, not even 24 hours after we had gotten together. He weighted in at 9 lbs, 5 oz. A pretty good sided little man. Jim and I took my mom to Pocatello for a medical appointment, so after that we went up the hill to see Deb. Sam was there with the baby. Grandma-great loves holding the new little ones.

Memorial Week 2009 was also a time when Jim's family (brother and sister) were in Blackfoot at the same time. Perry lives in Blackfoot, Adele and Larry live in Minnesota. It was great to see these guys together. L to R Perry, Jim, Adele, Larry.
